SO I went down to Columbia to do the "Computer Based Training" to get a network logon. Nothing too difficult in going through the course, and nothing particularly special in Columbia's network that makes this really necessary. Law Network usernames are limited to six letters, first initial and first 5 letters of your last name (apparently, decent usernames are anathema to every Columbia department). I had some trouble getting my laptop to work on the network, which is a Novell Netware network. My wireless connection got a signal, but would not get connected to the network. I just gave up after half an hour of trying to make it work.
Posted by at August 8, 2003 02:13 PMWell, I failed to even make it onto the network on Friday. The fact that it's Novell worries me slightly, since I've never liked the configuration of a Novell system.
But since my dorm room doesn't have the ethernet connection installed yet, and until it's installed the phone line in my room doesn't seem to work (which means no dialup), it looks like I'm stuck using the computer lab until Monday.
Posted by: Anthony Rickey at August 9, 2003 10:55 PMWell, now that I installed the client for Netware networks, I cannot access any network resources on my Windows network at home. Let me know if you know how to solve this.
Posted by: Avi Frisch at August 10, 2003 10:07 AMErm... my networking is rusty, and almost non-existent with Windows XP, but do remember that you have to log on to the proper domain when you log on to the computer. In the 'classic' logon structure, this is done pretty easily when you boot the machine: there's a box set up for it. My guess is that your domain is currently set to whatever Columbia's is (and if I knew that, I'd probably be online right now :(), but that your home network has a different name.
The 'standard' XP logon (the one with the cute icons and bootup screen) doesn't seem to have a box to allow you to change this--it defaults to whatever domain it's set up for.
Anyway, that is just a guess, realizing that I've not seen your machine, have no idea how the network here works, and haven't installed a Netware network in eight years. If it turns out I'm wrong, take it in the spirit it was meant. :)
Posted by: Anthony Rickey at August 10, 2003 08:19 PMFigured it out. I had to install the client for netware networks on my other machines and now everything works fine again. Not sure why this is, but I don't care that much either.
